If any country possessed the magical ability to conjure up the brilliance of pure light and the expanse of far horizons, it is Mongolia. This vast territory cradles a wealth of landscapes, from the remote, isolated mountains of the Altai Range to the sweeping steppes and grasslands of the Mongolian Plateau, from the dense forests and crystalline lakes of the north to the ancient sea bed that is the Gobi desert in the south. Despite Mongolia's natural splendour and the notoriety of its great empire builder, Genghis Khan, Mongolia remains relatively unknown to the outside world. Few visitors travel beyond the environs of the captial at Ulan Bator and fewer still have ever been to the Great Gobi National Park in southwest Mongolia.
