Russia's Climate

Spring

Mongolia's spring arrives sometime in late May to mark the relatively short transition from winter to summer. As the hours of daylight increase and the ground slowly warms, nature awakens from a long sleep. Though warming during the daytime, even in spring the nights can bring sub-freezing temperatures and frost.

Mongolia can be very windy at any time of year, the winds are especially fierce in spring, when mountain valleys warm very quickly. In the absence of external influences, the colder air in the higher Altai Mountains of western Mongolia slides toward lower elevations, creating chinook winds which fill the air with blowing sand and dust. The persistent westerly winds approaching the Ulaanbaatar area from the west bring a slightly sunnier climate to the capital than might otherwise be the case. Springtime on the Gobi Desert can be beautiful.
