There are numerous words in the Russian language that sound like and have practically the same meaning as English words.

aeroport airport
informa tsiya information
bagazh Baggage
taksi taxi
otel hotel
restoran restaurant
telefon telephone

There are numerous other examples, but beware that some Russian words have acquired a very different meaning from English even though they have a similar pronunciation. For example, the word fabrika means factory, not fabric.

The following brief guides to pronunciation are nontechnical in nature and ignore many fine points, but they should be adequate to help you pronounce Russian words.

The Russian alphabet  contains 5 soft vowels  and 5 hard vowels  . In addition, there are 21 consonants  and two signs to indicate either a "hard" or "soft" pronunciation of consonants.
